Our School Vision: Our goal is to produce members of society who are Considerate to everyone they meet, who have a Co-operative approach to life and who are Confident in each other and in themselves to strive for the very best that they can be.
We aim to achieve this by using Christian values as our guide and helping them to grow within a caring and inclusive community
How English fits into the vision:
We aim to deliver a high quality English curriculum that gives children the best possible opportunities to become confident, literate, successful members of society with a deep love and understanding of English language and literature. We believe the development of Literacy skills is central to improving a child's life chances at St. Bartholomew’s Church of England Primary School.
Our English Subject Leader: Hello, my name is Mrs Dawson and I am the English subject leader. I am passionate about all areas of the English curriculum, but have a particular love for reading and thirst for knowledge! I love nothing more than settling down with a good book, a cup of tea and a chocolate biscuit and if you ask the children from our school (past or present) they will tell you the same. I also love reading and exciting my own children in a plethora of high quality books- books are the gifts you can open again and again!
Similarly, I love the opportunity to create a curriculum which excites our children to be writers! Seeing the learning journey from start to finish and enjoying sharing the pride in children's final writing outcomes, is one of my favourite things to do.
Our English Curriculum:
The overarching aim for English in the national curriculum is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written language, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment. The national curriculum for English aims to ensure that all pupils:
- read easily, fluently and with good understanding
- develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information
- acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language
- appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage
- write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences
- use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas
- are competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate
Our English Intent: Our intent for English at St Bartholomew's is to deliver a high quality English curriculum that gives children the best possible opportunities to become confident, literate, successful members of society with a deep love and understanding of English language and literature. We want all children to communicate clearly and confidently in spoken and written form and become masters of language. Rich texts are at the heart of our teaching and a love for reading is promoted throughout the school. We endeavour to use inspirational ideas to engage children in learning, providing memorable experiences and bringing topics to life through real life contexts.
